Smithsonian Science for the Classroom

All new! Smithsonian Science for the Classroom for Grades 1–5 is designed to be a comprehensive core science program that delivers science content through phenomena- and problem-based learning where students solve complex problems and build explanations for phenomena.

  • Modules are developed using the innovative “backwards design” model and coherent conceptual storylines that build up to a final Science or Design Challenge.
  • Engaging, student-centered instruction ensures ALL your students are successful across differing ability levels and demographics.
  • Complete instructional modules provide everything teachers and students need to be successful—print, science equipment, digital.

Program Organization

The SSEC started by organizing grade-level Performance Expectations into four “bundles” per grade. The PEs within each bundle are tied together by a phenomenon- or problem-based question intended to motivate students. These questions serve as 20 module titles across life science, Earth and space science, physical science, and engineering design.
